*HISTORICAL NOTES ON THONDAIMANARU
1851 The American Missionary opened a school for early education in Thondaimanaru
1867 A wooden brigde to connect Vadamaraadchi to Valikaamam was built  under the supervision of Regional Governer Dyke during British rule
1888 Some of our relatives migrated to Malaysia in the year 1888 in search of a better life. Many of them excelled in their endeavours and were recognized by the Government of Malaysia.
1912 Thondaimanaru Veerahathy Pillai Saivappaadasalai was established by Mr Veeragathiyar family  in the year  1912 
1913 Mr. Veerakathipillai, a Philanthropist with a distinguished career in overseas trade, owned 8 ships. 'Vallinayaki' the first ship set sailed in the year 1913.
1927 Mahathma Gandhi on his tour in Ceylon visitted Thondaimanaru in 1927. He was presented with a donation of Cash towards the Independence of India.
1937 The Governer General of Ceylon Hon. Caldecott came to Thondaimamaru to meet his friend Mr. Suppaiah Veeragathi Pillai.
July 20th,  1940 Sannithy-Anantha Aashramam was started by Mylvahanam Swamy on this day, in the year 1940.
1953 A barrage (Dam) was built across Thondaimanaru river to prevent sea water intrusion and desalination of the Vadamaraadchi lagoon and opened in the year 1953. 
After 1953 A large wind powered water pump was built on the south side of the barrage to pump out the saline water from the lagoon to the sea and commissioned after 1953.
March 25th, 1954 Mr. Navartnasamy, a hero from Thondaimanaru Swam accross the palk strait from VVT to Kodiyakkarai TN, on this day, in the year 1954.
Oct 2nd, 1954 A mordern concrete two lane bridge was built to replace the wooden bridge and commisioned by Sir John Kottalawella GG, on this day,  in the year 1954.
1960 March Mr. Thurairatnam fondly rememberd as 'MP', had a  distinguished career in public service as an elected MP  for Point Pedro constituency for 5 consecutive terms. 
1962 Hon. Judge Mr. Sriskandarajah, another distinguished Scholar from Thondaimanaru was sworn in as Judge of the  Supreme Court of Ceylon in the year 1962
March  11th, 1965 Prior to the 1965 General Election a debate was held on this day in Thondaimanaru for all contestants to address the public.
1972 A bus, property of the SL government, was burnt at Thondaimanaru Junction by Thalaivar in the year 1972 to protest against the Republican Constitution.
1980 August  The barrage was rebuilt to make the desalination process more efficient  on the 10th festival day at Sannithy, in the year 2018.
August 15th 1980 The 40 ft Thaer for Sannithy Muruhan construction  பெரும் தேர் கட்டுமானம் work started with funds from devotees, on this day, in the year 1980.
Sept 6th, 1984 Trial run பெரும் தேர் வெள்ளோட்டம் on this day  in the year 1984.
April 21st, 1986 Sannithy perum thaer சந்நிதியானின் பெருந்தேர் was burnt to ashes by the Sri Lankan military, on this day, in the year 1986.
Sept 27th, 2013   An ultra-modern elegant two lane bridge was built  to replace the previous Concrete bridge that was demolished during the civil war.
>>> Our villagers had a tradition of staging ancient form of drama 'Koothu'  before Sivaraathiri at Konesar Temple. Ancestors of 'annavi' Chandran and Kathiran were leaders 
>>>Thondaimanaru Canal was built by Karunakara Pallava Thondaiman in 7th Century CE by diverting Valli Aaru. The present day Barrage is located at the start of this Canal. 
>>> A Murugan Kovil  might have existed from ancient time at the banks of Valli Aaru that was diverted in 7th  Century CE
>>>Veeramaakaazi Amman Koyil built by Karunakara Thondaiman -a General fro Chola Kingdom in 13th century CE.
>>>Thachcha Kollai Pilliyar Kovil said to have been built in 1815 (Mr. Rajasegaram 1994).  Later it was renovated by a wealthy business man Mr. Chinnaiah (Vellaithamby) in late 1940's 
>>>Ancient Konesar Kovil was demolished by Dutch (After 1660) and a church built in that location. Later this was removed and Konesar Kovil was re-established.
